WGT Lie Percentage: How to Handle Rough, Sand, and Fescue
Understand lie ranges and power adjustments for rough, sand, and fescue.
Lie percentage in World Golf Tour (WGT) can make or break your shot. Here’s how to read the lie, when to club up, and how our WGT lie calculator helps you adjust for rough, sand, and fescue.
WGT Lie Tips
Lie percentage describes how buried or clean the ball sits in turf and is shown in-game as a percent. It directly affects how much extra power you need to reach the same carry. Below are practical ranges and recommendations used by the calculator and community testers.
Recommended lie adjustments (practical)
- 30% and below (Clean/nominal): No adjustment; play the club normally.
- 31–50% (Light rough): Add ~5–10% power depending on grass length and moisture.
- 51–70% (Heavy rough): Add ~10–20% power; consider a punch or more loft to avoid too much spin.
- 71–90% (Deep rough/fescue): Add ~20–40% and club up; expect variable contact and less rollout.
- 91–100% (Buried/very heavy): Treat as a recovery — use high-loft, controlled impact, and expect significant distance loss; aim conservatively.
Example
Example: 120 yd shot in 60% rough with a 120 yd club. A 60% lie suggests adding ~12% power → recommended power ~ 112% (or club up and use a controlled swing). Practice these exact setups in replay to refine your personal adjustments.
Notes on sand & punch shots
Sand behaves inconsistently across clubs and green shapes. For bunker shots use a punch-style contact and treat the lie as a deeper rough — add 20–40% or use a club with higher loft and a controlled swing. The site’s Flop/Punch/Lob calculators include specialized profiles for these shot types.
