Course Notes: St Andrews
Links golf strategy: wind‑first targeting, firm fairways, and conservative misses.
Hole Guide
Hole 1 — Par 4
- Typical wind: Helping/cross; aim to widest fairway.
- Elevation delta: Flat; rollout is generous.
- Safe miss: Favor left side; opens approach angle.
- Putt tendency: Subtle left break near front pins.
Hole 2 — Par 4
- Typical wind: Cross; position for open green.
- Elevation delta: Slight uphill into green.
- Safe miss: Short‑center; avoid right bunkers.
- Putt tendency: Firm rolls; don’t over‑aim.
Hole 6 — Par 3 (Links Example)
- Typical wind: Variable cross; high loft reduces drift but increases chance of wind disruption.
- Elevation delta: Generally flat; watch for subtle green crowns that push balls offline.
- Safe miss: Favor the side with the gentler slope to avoid long comeback putts.
- Strategy: When wind picks up, play a lower trajectory and aim one or two clicks into the wind depending on strength.
